1. Whatever happened to Melinda is probably something that she doesn't want to remember that caused her problems, so she doesn't want to tell anyone.
2. Yes, I would try to help her by just being her friend and asking her what's wrong. I'd try to get someone who could help her better than I could.
3. I think it is realistic that students would avoid coming to school for personal reasons because there could be something that nobody knows that's causing them pain so they need to get away for a day.
