Yes I would try to help her, I'd tell her that it is okay to tell people whats bothering you because other people could be going through the same thing.

Yes I think it is realistic that students excuse themselfs from school due to teachers, other peers, parents, etc. I think this because if something personal is going on and they are so depressed that instead of coming to school they'd rather sit at home.
